What the Heart Knows: Milford-Haven
Published in Paperback by Milford-Haven Enterprises (July, 1997)
Author: Mara Purl
Average review score:

Lots of fun!
"What the Heart Knows" is good old-fashioned story-telling at its best. The characters are all fun to read and the plot keeps you going with surprising twists and turns. I can't wait for the next one!

Draws the reader into the story easily
I read Mara Purl's What The Heart Knows at one sitting, and there appears to be no end to her talent. Her verbal imagery is very effective, and she draws her readers into the story easily. Good work!

Giving Danielle Steel a run for her money!
I have just read "What The Heart Knows" with great enjoyment. All Mara Purl's characters are vivid and each one is memorable. Although there are a lot of them, there's no confusing them. She has excellent control of each one and scatters her hints and clues which I look forward to having explained/ expanded upon as the series continues. This writer is well on her way to giving Danielle Steel a run for her money!

Couldn't put it down!
Both of the first two in Mara Purl's series of "Milford-Haven" novels were excellent. "What The Heart Knows" and "Closer Than You Think" were most enjoyable and entertaining. Once I got into them, I couldn't put them down!

Great reading, compelling serial
As a reporter for the Japan Times in Tokyo (where Mara Purl grew up), I've followed Mara's career for a long time, and have lately mentioned her novels in my column. My only question is...do I have to wait 10 more books to find out what happened to Chris???

Intriguing and fascinating!
"I just finished Child Secrets. I think I would have to say that it is by far and away the best of the series. I found the novel intriguing and fascinating, while eduactional and entertaining. I am amazed on how the complex lives of Milford-Haven only seem to get more complex with time. I can't imagine what will happen to these indiviudals by the "end" of their fictional life time..."

Well written and gripping!
As former Managing Editor for the Associated Press, I knew Mara Purl's work as a journalist. In her Milford-Haven novels I thought the writing was crisp and clean, the dialogue realistic, the scenes well described. The books are well written and should be gripping to soap opera fans. I salute her ingenuity.

Patrons are enoying reading this series!

Nobody's Fault: Milford-Haven Book 5
Published in Paperback by Haven Books (01 December, 2001)
Author: Mara Purl

Loved this book! I could picture the beautiful room...
"I loved this book! I came right home and scarfed it down. It's I love the storyline and the way it's going. And it was fun that the Miranda character visited Durango, Colorado. We've stayed at the Strater many times, and I could picture the beautiful rooms so clearly -- I didn't know about the secret panels in the lobby! We'll have to visit again and take a careful look."

Captivating series!
As Director of UNAVCO and Radiometrics, I study and measure the movement of tectonic plates via satellite imagery. I found the first four of Mara Purl's series on Milford-Haven quite captivating. I particularly like the forays into various spiritual, psychological and technical realms. Her insights into art, music, and nature seem to emerge in a way similar to their appearance in life. Quite an impressive creation. After helping with her with research for "Nobody's Fault", it was fun to read and see she'd woven the threads of facts into the fabric well.

West Milford, Nj (Images of America)

a sense of home
Being originally from West Milford, this book showed me what it was long, LONG before I lived there. A truly interesting book filled with pictures of places I see on a regular basis when I'm home and some places which I will never see.

Lovers of Local History, Look Here!
This is a beautiful book, meticulously researched. It's a must for the lover of local New Jersey histories. The author has provided many scenes and vignettes of this small New Jersey town at the turn of the century, and you can truly see what life was like in a rural NJ town, before urban and suburban sprawl. Truly nicely done!

Advice to a grand-daughter : letters from Queen Victoria to Princess Victoria of Hesse
Published in Unknown Binding by Heinemann ()
Author: Victoria
Average review score:

A fascinating collection of letters
"Advice to a grand-daughter" is a collection of letters from Queen Victoria to her granddaughter, Princess Victoria of Hesse, wonderfully selected and edited by Richard Hough. The letters date from April 1870 to July 1900. Victoria of Hesse was the oldest daughter of Queen Victoria's Hessian grandchildren, and after their mother (the Queen's daughter Alice) died in 1878, Queen Victoria undertook to raise them long-distance, often by barraging Princess Victoria with instructions on how to deal with the younger children.

As always, the Queen's charming and forceful-- if occasionally overbearing-- personality makes itself felt in her letters. The Hessian royal children grew up to be forceful personalities in their own right. Princess Victoria married Prince Louis of Battenberg; the family changed their name to Mountbatten towards the end of the First World War; Victoria's youngest son is best known as the late Earl Mountbatten of Burma, and one of her grandsons is Prince Philip, the current Duke of Edinburgh. The second girl, Princess Elizabeth, married a son of Tsar Alexander II of Russia and, after his murder by anarchists, took the veil and was herself murdered during the Russian Revolution. The third, Princess Irene, married the only brother of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The youngest daughter, Alix (or "Alicky", as she appears in these letters), married Tsar Nicholas II of Russia; she and her entire family were killed during the Revolution. The boy, Ernest Louis ("Ernie"), was the last reigning Grand Duke of Hesse, a patron of the arts.

These letters provide a detailed and fascinating recounting of some of the childhood events of the Hessians-- Princess Victoria's marriage, the Queen's hissy fits over each marriage, in turn, of the three youngest girls', family births and family deaths, the Queen's trips to Europe. An absorbing book, highly recommended to anyone with an interest in Queen Victoria and the intertwined relationships of European royalty of the period.
